On May 19, 2009, HARPS was asked to assist the ASPCA in raiding the
Thyme & Sage Ranch in Cazenovia, Wisconsin. The ranch was a rescue
sanctuary and under contract as the Richland County animal shelter.
We arrived at 6 A.M. in a caravan that
included the ASPCA mobile crime scene lab, the HSUS unmarked semi, canine
rescue units, and the HARPS ambulance. HARPS investigators had been asked
to evaluate over 130 hooved animals including horses, sheep, goats, miniature
horses, llamas, and a steer. None of us expected the depth of neglect or
the large number of animals involved.
Barn after barn was filled with
animals in deplorable conditions. Everywhere we looked there were dead or
suffering animals or the remains of ones that had died. All of the animals had
to be photographed, examined, and catalogued for the criminal case against the
ranch owner. By day's end, over 300 dogs had been removed as well as almost 100
other animals. The count included an artic fox, geese, peacocks, a rooster,
sheep, goats, llamas, one steer, a ferret, morning doves, cockatiels, miniature
horses, and horses.
HARPS years of
rescue experience and expertise with hooved animals allows us to assist some of
the largest rescue organizations in the U.S.
